The Shiba Inu is a hunting dog first used in Japan to startle birds and small animals out of brushwood (bushes), earning it the name "brushwood dog". Because the breed has been used since ancient times and language has evolved since then, however, it is disputed whether this is the proper translation or if "Shiba Inu" means "small dog".

Shibas are a clever, agile breed with a drive to chase and hunt. The breed's background as a hunting companion-- with instincts to follow and capture prey-- means that Shiba Inus are known to be quite active and highly possessive of anything they find and can be leery towards strangers. Because of these qualities, a Shiba can be difficult to train, but the breed's stubbornness is outweighed by its overall gentleness with families, intelligence, and endearing friendly face.

Trivia[]

ShibaOdysseySmall

An orange Shiba Inu dog from Super Mario Odyssey.

  • An orange Shiba Inu dog very similar in shape and appearance appears in Super Mario Odyssey. The dog itself wears a hat and can dig up various items under soil or sand. Their animations are even reused from Nintendogs, even though their bark sound and model is from the sequel.
  • A Shiba Inu was one of Shigeru Miyamoto's pets, which was one of the main ideas for the video game.
  • Shibas could have been in the games because they originated from Japan. This isn't always true, though.
  • The common sound effects for Shibas in Nintendogs + Cats were actually recorded by Shigeru's Shiba Inu.
