Truman had a number of pets. While growing up on a farm in Missouri, Truman like to ride alongside his father on a black shetland pony. He and his brother had a black and tan dog named Tandy, and a bobtailed Maltese cat named Bob. At the White House, the Trumans owned Mike, an Irish setter, before they received Feller as a Christmas gift in 1947. Harry Truman once said, "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." |

Checkers is the most famous of the Nixons' pets. When Nixon was criticized for accepting campaign donations, he defended himself with a televised speech where he mentioned the only personal gift he had received through donations was a Cocker Spaniel his daughter had named "Checkers." |

The Hayes brought many family pets to the White House, including two dogs, a goat, mockingbird and canaries. U.S. Consul David B. Sickels heard that President Hayes's wife, Lucy, liked cats, and sent her a special one from Siam (now Thailand). Siam was the first Siamese cat in the United States. Before this, Siamese cats were only owned by the royal family of the King of Siam. Siam's friendliness and curiosity made her the most popular Hayes pet. The cat could wander wherever she pleased, and seemed to take special delight in greeting guests visiting with Mrs. Hayes. |

King Tut was a police dog who was a big part of Hoover's campaign. Hoover took pictures with King Tut, which made him (Hoover, not the dog!) seem more worm and friendly, and thousands of autographed photos were sent to voters. Once in the White House, King Tut remained in the public eye. He patroled the White House fences nightly, and became known as "the dog that worried himself to death." |

When Abraham Lincoln was walking to the local market, people always saw Fido trailing behind carrying a parcel in his mouth. Fido was a floppy-eared, rough-coated yellowish dog of uncertain ancestry. He was the only dog President Lincoln ever owned, but when he was elected as president of the United States, Mr. Lincoln decided not to take Fido to the White House with him due to his old age. Fido was eventually given away to two neighbor boys in Springfield, IL. |

Him and Her were registered beagles born on June 27, 1963. President Johnson often took his beagles on his walks with the press on the White House lawn. When the President lifted Him by his ears to greet a group, it caused a storm of protest. One of Him's offspring, Freckles also stayed in the White House with the President. |

When President Carter and his family entered the White House in 1977, his daughter Amy also brought her Siamese Cat, Misty Malarky Ying Yang. Misty was the last cat to occupy the White House until President Bill Clinton arrived with Socks in 1993. Misty was a famous cat, who appeared on the cover of the 1986 Purina Cat Chow Celebrity Cat Calendar, and also had a (mock) interview in the Christian Science Monitor magazine, "First Cat Denies Rise in Mice." President Carter's run-in with a Swamp Rabbit while on a fishing trip in 1979 was perhaps his most famous animal encounter while in the White House. The rabbit jumped in the water and started swimming toward the president's boat. He defended himself by using his paddle to splash water at it. The story was reported with the headline "President Attacked by Rabbit." |

President Reagan owned many dogs and horses. When the First Couple's previous dog, Lucky, grew too big, he was moved to back Rancho del Cielo, the Reagan estate in California, and the Reagans brought Rex to the White House. One of Rex's first official acts was to help throw the switch that lit the National Christmas Tree in 1985. Lucky and Rex lived for many years afterwards with the Reagans, at Rancho del Cielo. Reagan, who was a great lover and owner of dogs, was known for saying, "The best way to get over a dog's death is to get another soon." |
