It was said Pete often chased and even bit White House visitors, and he was accused of ripping the pants off of a French ambassador in 1906, but in 1910 Pete's name was cleared as the ambassador was quoted as saying Pete had been falsely accused.

Siam was the first Siamese cat in the United States. Before this, Siamese cats were only owned by the royal family of the King of Siam. Once in the White House, King Tut remained in the public eye. He patroled the White House fences nightly, and became known as "the dog that worried himself to death."

President Carter's run-in with a Swamp Rabbit while on a fishing trip in 1979 was perhaps his most famous animal encounter while in the White House. The rabbit jumped in the water and started swimming toward the president's boat. He defended himself by using his paddle to splash water at it.
